BIG ISLAND ADVENTURES
Two Must-See Waterfalls Near Hilo
Hilo is a nature lover’s paradise, and its lush landscape is home to some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Hawaii. If you’re planning a visit, there are two spots you absolutely can’t miss: Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls. Both are stunning in their own ways, offering unique views, easy access (to varying degrees), and incredible photo opportunities. Let me take you through my experiences visiting these two iconic waterfalls.
Rainbow Falls: A Gem in Wailuku River State Park
Rainbow Falls is a quick and easy stop just outside of downtown Hilo. Located in Wailuku River State Park, it’s famous for the rainbows that often appear in the mist on sunny mornings. The website does not say that dogs are not allowed, therefore if you do bring your dog they must be on leash. Remember to clean up after your dog.
Getting There and Parking
The parking lot for Rainbow Falls is small, so patience is key. The lot fills up quickly, but there’s usually a steady flow of cars coming and going, so you won’t have to wait too long for a spot. Just be sure to avoid blocking the driving lane while waiting—it’s a small space, and things can get tight.
The View from Below
The lower viewing area, right by the parking lot, offers a fantastic front-facing view of the falls. This area is incredibly accessible. There’s a wide ramp for wheelchairs, and the viewing platform is just a couple of steps up for those who prefer not to use the ramp.
It’s a prime photo opportunity, but it’s also a popular spot, so don’t linger too long—let others enjoy the view too. If you time it right, you might catch a rainbow forming in the mist of the falls, especially in the early morning hours.
Hiking to the Topside View
If you’re up for a bit of a climb, you can take the trail to the top of the falls. You’ll find the trailhead to the left of the parking lot, and it’s impossible to miss.
The trail is short but steep, with rocky, uneven steps that can get slippery after rain. There’s a handrail most of the way, but it’s not always on both sides, so take your time and watch your footing. Unfortunately, there’s no ramp or alternative way up for those with mobility challenges.
If you have a dog or service dog with you, this would be a good time to have a 2 handle leash to keep your dog close to you and out of the way of others trying to ascend or descend the uneven stairs.
Once you reach the top, the view is worth the effort. You’ll get a closer look at the Wailuku River as it flows toward the falls and a unique perspective of the river below. It’s quieter up here, too, making it a peaceful spot to soak in the beauty of the area.
Akaka Falls: A Jungle Paradise
After Rainbow Falls, hop in the car and head to Akaka Falls State Park. It’s about a 30-40 minute drive north of Hilo, along Highway 220 (Mamalahoa Highway). Along the way, there’s a scenic overlook just 2.4 miles from Hilo that offers a stunning view of the bay—well worth a quick stop.
Akaka Falls is taller, more dramatic, and surrounded by dense jungle, making it a completely different experience from Rainbow Falls.
Getting There and Fees
The parking lot at Akaka Falls is small, and parking costs $10 per car. There’s also a $5 per person entrance fee, but keep in mind that you can only pay with a card—no cash accepted. Workers are usually there to help you navigate the payment machines if needed.
Before you go, check out the official park website for the most up-to-date information on hours and fees.

Accessibility
This trail isn’t the best choice if you have mobility issues or can’t manage stairs. The 0.4-mile loop trail to the falls is almost entirely made up of concrete steps, and about 95% of the route involves climbing or descending. AllTrails lists the elevation gain as 118 feet, but it feels like much more because of the stairs.
That said, if you’re up for the challenge, it’s a beautiful walk through a plant lover’s dream. The trail winds through lush jungle filled with vibrant tropical plants, and the atmosphere is like something out of a postcard.
Navigating the Trail
The path is paved and just wide enough for two people to pass each other. However, the dense jungle growth can make it feel narrower in places, which adds to the sense of adventure. If you are someone who wears glasses, the humidity in the jungle may cause your glasses to fog up. I have found these Anti-Fog Reusable Wipes to be quite effective.
If you’re hiking with a service dog, be prepared for the stairs—they can be tricky to navigate. Again, this would be a good time to have a 2 handle leash to keep them close. On the bright side, I’ve found that most people on the trail are very considerate when they see a dog and tend to give you extra space.
The View
Akaka Falls itself is absolutely breathtaking. At 442 feet tall, the waterfall cascades into a deep, lush ravine, creating a scene that feels almost unreal. The sound of the water crashing into the pool below is mesmerizing, and the viewing area offers a perfect vantage point for photos. Take your time on the walk to and from to take in the wide variety of plants in the area.
Comparing the Two Waterfalls
While both Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls are must-see stops near Hilo, they offer completely different experiences.
Rainbow Falls is more accessible, making it a great option for families, people with mobility issues, or those who just want a quick and easy visit. The short trail to the top provides a bit of adventure without being too demanding.· Akaka Falls is ideal for those who don’t mind a bit of a workout. The stair-filled loop trail is challenging but rewarding, and the surrounding jungle adds an extra layer of beauty to the experience.
Tips for Visiting Both Waterfalls
Arrive early. Both parking lots are small, so getting an early start can save you the hassle of waiting for a spot.
Pack a camera. These waterfalls are incredibly photogenic, and you’ll want to capture the moment.
Wear sturdy shoes. Whether you’re climbing the rocky steps at Rainbow Falls or tackling the stairs at Akaka Falls, good footwear is a must.
Bring water. The jungle-like humidity can sneak up on you, especially at Akaka Falls.
Respect the rules. Keep dogs leashed at Rainbow Falls and leave them at home for Akaka Falls (unless they’re service dogs).
On the way back to Hilo
As you head back into Hilo, be sure to watch for signs directing you to the “Scenic Route.” This roughly 4-mile detour takes you through a charming and unique part of Hilo, offering a peaceful escape and some truly memorable views. It’s well worth taking the extra time to explore!
Tail End
If you’re visiting Hilo, Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls are two experiences you shouldn’t miss. Each offers its own unique charm, from the easy accessibility and peaceful views of Rainbow Falls to the dramatic beauty and jungle adventure of Akaka Falls.
Take your time, enjoy the journey, and soak in the incredible natural beauty of these iconic Hawaiian waterfalls. Happy exploring
